Uncommon Spaces & Everyday Places photographic zine, November 2011)
I work as a photographer and historian to document the evolution of the built environment. This landscape is my home and these spaces, undeniably rich with history, play a significant role in shaping my identity and my community. I have attempted to frame each location with compassion and integrity even though some have been subject to years of neglect. In presenting these images as a whole, I ask the viewer to consider the deep connection we have to our surroundings and to understand that as we deliberately make alterations to the landscape, that it in turn alters our identities.
I have employed a variety of film cameras to capture these images. These are cameras that in many instances have themselves been forgotten or discarded in today's digital age. Their distinctive qualities capture the environment in an unparalleled and emotive manner.
Take a moment to thoughtfully consider what aspects of your community are most unique or set your neighborhood apart from other spaces. What does it mean for the future of your community when these symbolic landmarks are removed or replaced?
